Below are some of the known traditions of Igbos even before missionaries came to Africa:

1. In Igboland a woman lives apart from their husbands nor cooks for them or enters their husband’s quarters when she is on her period, she is seen as unclean . Even up till today such practice is still applicable in some part of Igboland especially by the traditionalist. Before a woman can enter the palace of Obi of Onitsha , she will be asked if she is on period, if yes, she will be asked to stay out.

Leviticus 15: 19-20
When a woman has her monthly period, she remains unclean, anyone who touches her or anything she has sat on becomes unclean.

2. An Igbo man’s ancestral heritage, called “Ana Obi” is not sellable, elders will not permit this. If this is somehow done due to the influence of the West the person is considered a fool and is ostracized by the community.

3. Igbos have practiced the taking a late brothers wife into marriage after she had been widowed until the white men came. Now it is rarely done but except in very rural villages of the bush.

A widow of a dead man is not to married outside the family; it is the duty of the dead man's brother to marry her.

4. In Igboland, there is a unique form of apprenticeship in which either a male family member or a community member will spend six(6) years (usually in their teens to their adulthood) working for another family. And on the seventh year, the head of the host household, who is usually the older man who brought the apprentice into his household, will establish (Igbo: idu) the apprentice
by either setting up a business for him or giving money or tools by which to make a living.

Exodus 21:2
If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve you for six years. In the seventh year he is to be set free without having to pay you anything.

5. In Igboland , the yam is very important to the Igbo as it is their staple crop. There are celebrations such as the New yam festival (Igbo: Iri Ji) which are held for the harvesting of the yam. New Yam festival (Igbo: Iri ji) is celebrated annually to secure a good harvest of the staple crop. Those old days it is an abomination for one to eat a new harvest before the festival. It's a tradition that you give the gods of the land first as a thanks given.

Deuteronomy 16:9
Count 7 weeks from the time that you begin to harvest the crops, and celebrate the harvest festival to honor the lord your God, by bringing him a freewill offering in proportion to the blessing he has given you. Celebrate in the lord's presence together with your children, servants, foreigners . Be sure that you obey my command, said the lord.

6. In Igboland it's a tradition that the male children are circumcised on the 8th day. This tradition is still practice till date.

Leviticus 12:3
On the eighth day, the child shall be circumcised.

7. In Igboland, there a practice known as "ile omugwo ". After a woman has given birth to a child, a very close and experienced relative of her, in most case her mother is required by tradition to come spend time with her and her husband. In which she is to do all the work of the wife, while the new mom’s only assignment to the baby will be to breastfeed. This goes on for a month or more. In the Igbo old tradition, at this time, the new mom lives apart from her husband, would not cook or enter his quarters.

Leviticus 12:1-4
For seven days after a woman gives birth, she is ritually unclean as she is during her monthly period. It will be 33 days until she is ritually clean from the loss of blood; she is not to touch anything that is holy.

I still DO NOT understand why there's so much noise about Trump's decision to ban refugees from Muslim countries?? There are '100,000 empty fully air conditioned tents' in Mina- Saudi Arabia capable of housing 3 million people yet Saudi Arabia refuses to take the refugees, who speaks same language, same culture, same tradition, same religion, yet Saudi Arabia feels it's 'a security risks to accept the refugees' but wants the Christian world to do so? I'm trying to understand this thing called 'common sense', how it's been used. Is Saudi Arabia not too wicked for turning it's back against its own? Why blaming the US? Remember it is part of Trump's election promises, yet the Americans voted for him, meaning dats what they want.*

*Germany took over 1 million refugees and Saudi Arabia came up with a proposal of spending billions to build mosques in Germany to cater for the spiritual needs of the migrants, but won't accept them in Saudi Arabia!!!, what kind of ideology is this, and some Christians are debating these issues. Today, Germans are paying the price and defence budget had doubled because of these migrants. "Why cant these Muslims migrate to Muslim countries" and live in peace with their kind and practice sharia to the fullest without issues.*

• *Christians are barred from entering Mecca, yet no issues!!!. 
• Jews don't travel to Saudi Arabia, and some Arab countries yet no issues!!!.*

*Muslims need to do internal in house cleansing and reorientation, on all subjects that makes good Muslims suffer because of the activities of those "extremists", by making sure that their Imams do not radicalise young people thru hateful preaching and intolerance.*

*All muslims around the world should come to Western Nigeria and learn the tolerance and civilised Islam, where a Yorubaman is peacefully, and happily living with his Christian wife. There are 1000 and 1million examples where some of the children goes to mosque with their father, while some goes to church with their mother, and to Crown it all, on ILEYA AND CHRISTMAS DAYS, the entire family celebrates together, it looks simple, but not easy because it requires high sense of understanding to co-habit in this form without issues.*

From the names above, it’s clear that over 80% of the victims are Igbos. Earlier this year (2011) Vanguard newspapers of 12^th January 2011 (online version) reported that the Igbo community lost 40 members from the Jos crisis of that month (the author has lost count of different Jos crises). From my own personal experiences: One of my uncle’s house was completely burnt down in one of the disturbances in Kano in 2004. My own immediate younger sister escaped death in one of the disturbances in Jos, Plateau State. The list(s) is endless. The trends are consistent. From the 1945, 1953, and 1966 pogrom where over 50,000 Igbos were killed thru the civil war (over 1 million Igbos died) till date, the Igbos have always been the targets. This is for no just cause. Lost properties, assets, etc cannot be quantified in monetary terms. The Igbos have also been punished is several ways (abandoned properties issue, giving of £20 to every Igbo person after the war, despite any amount he/she had before the war). Meanwhile, the Igbos have made the most sacrifices than any other tribe for the unity of the country.

As in the 1945, 1953, and 1966 pogrom against the Igbos where the federal government appeared helpless to defend and protect Ndiigbo, the subsequent governments have also followed similar trends, particularly in the Northern States where Igbo’s have consistently been killed since the end of the war till date. Simply put, the Igbos are endangered species. As you read thru this piece, please purse and observe a minute silence, for the souls of the innocent Igbo people and other Nigerians killed for nothing sake.

Enough is enough. No more shedding of Igbo bloods. Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu once said that, if the price of nationhood is constant shedding of bloods, then let us not be a nation. Well, since the government cannot protect its citizens and Ndiigbo in particular, then Igbos have no choice but to protect themselves with all means necessary. Igbos should remember that self-preservation is the strongest human instinct. This is the time for the Igbos to sink all their differences and unite for the purposes of securing the safety of their lives and properties all over Nigeria. The Igbos must rise up together to face this challenges or continue to be killed every time. What affects one Igbo person directly, affects all Igbos indirectly. I therefore call on all Igbos, (All Ezes, Ohanaeze, all Igbo communities home and abroad, all Igbo unions home and abroad, etc) to immediately seek the ways out of these constant killings.

Perhaps, Igbos should start relocating their businesses and families out of the Northern region, reject youth service postings in the Northern region etc. This is because, they are simply the first targets to be killed at the slightest disturbances that does not concern them. Life first before anything else. However, the government must pay compensation to all those innocent families that lost their loved ones. The fault is not theirs. America and United Kingdom paid compensation to the various families of 9/11 (September 11, 2001) and 7/7 (7^th July 2005) terrorist attacks in New York and London. May the souls of those innocent people that were killed, rest in peace. May God also bless Nigeria.
